The Opportunity:

For this Finance Manager position, you will primarily contribute towards and prepare the monthly management accounts, annual budgets and statutory accounts.

You will support the Head of Finance and Finance Business Partner and build strong relationships with budget holders across function.

Some of the key responsibilities for this successful person would be but no limited to:

  • You will manage finance staff with the day-to-day finance operations.
  • Prepare annual budgets by liaising with budget holders to prepare draft budgets for departments.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the statutory Annual Report and Financial Statements in line with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting for Institutions and the Financial Forecast for the SFA.  
  • Prepare or oversee all other statutory returns, e.g., HMRC returns, grant claims, pension returns as directed.
  • Produce and distribute monthly budget reports to budget holders and hold monthly review meetings with budget holders to ensure budgets are well managed and take action to address any variances from budget.
  • Ensure the integrity of ledgers and ensure monthly reconciliations of the bank and other key control accounts are prepared.
  • Monitor and control actual expenditure against allocated revenue and capital approvals.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register.
  • Deliver training to Budget Holders and stakeholders.
  • Report directly to the Chief Finance Officer and the Head of Finance any potential, actual or suspected irregularities within the financial regulations and financial management.
  • Attend meetings as the “Finance representative” either in person or virtually, including the presentation of financial information.
  • Support the Buyer and Procurement Manager to ensure that all procurement is carried out correctly and in accordance with the financial regulations and procurement procedures, ensuring best value for money is achieved.
  • Support the Buyer and Procurement Manager in procurement, benchmarking and tendering exercises.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors.
  • Prepare reports and provide analysis on finance issues.

The Candidate:

The successful Finance Manager will be/have:

  • Be AAT Qualified or Part Qualified – (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or equivalent qualifications with significant experience
  • Be experienced in the preparation of management accounts and financial reports for budget holders
  • Experience of managing a team and track record of successful people management
  • Managing the nominal ledger and carrying out month-end and year-end processes
  • Preparing returns, e.g., VAT returns, grant claims
  • Ability to develop appropriate reports and interpret information
  • Ability to convey financial information clearly and concisely to non-finance 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with a variety of people
  • Excellent analytical and IT skills
  • Proactive mentor to the team

Desirable – (But not essential)

  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification
  • Member of a CCAB Accountancy Body (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA)
  • Experience of preparation of annual budgets and statutory accounts
